Cry Like a Baby

After spending ten days in Minneapolis with my son and his little family it was time to fly back home to Austin.

It wasn’t until I plopped down in the chair at gate F11 that I realized just how tired I was. Ten days with a newborn and and three-year old was such a blessed privilege, but I didn’t remember being that exhausted when my own two boys were small. Perhaps being 30 plus years older had everything to do with my state of weariness.

For you moms of newborns, I understand how sleep deprivation can get to you. I was reminded just how demanding little ones are of your time. When all was finally quiet in the house at night, there was no opportunity to relax. (Thankfully I am just the grandmother, so I didn’t have all the responsibilities of the mom.) Had to hurry and get to sleep because that baby was going to be waking up in the next 2-3 hours, and that was my shift.

  • Each day I planned to get caught up on my daily Bible reading. It didn’t happen.
  • Every night I prayed, but fell asleep somewhere before Amen.
  • And emails? My inbox was jam-packed. No time to read my online devotions.

While I rocked and cradled my new grandson, I spoke quick prayers, but spent most of my time just gazing in awe at the wonder of his creation. Thankful beyond measure for his healthy, perfect little body, but too consumed with the moment to spend time with my Savior.

This grandmother’s love tank was being filled, but my soul was starving for more of Jesus.

So, there I sat at gate F11. Finally, time to catch up on emails. The first one that popped up for that day came from K-Love’s Encouraging Word:

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.      1 Peter 2:2-3

That got my attention! After spending 10 days with my grandson I was quite familiar with the intense cravings of a newborn. He cries. Very loudly. He grows frantic waiting. Nothing will satisfy his need for nourishment or quiet his cries except that bottle.

Oh, had I ever been craving some spiritual nourishment! I had been longing for Jesus. I missed the quiet time we shared when I was back home in Texas at my breakfast table. Just the two of us.

When a baby cries, someone comes quickly to swoop him up, cradle him, and give that milk he’s craving.

That’s exactly what I should do!

I just needed to cry like a baby. Earnestly call out to Jesus, and He will come hold me and fill my soul.

God hears the cries of those who love Him. Over and over in the Bible we hear of those who called out to the Lord in their times of distress and despair. One need only read through the 73 Psalms written by David to find examples:

I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. Psalm 57:2

Hear my cries, O God, listen to my prayers; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Psalm 61:1-2

Lord, you are kind and forgiving and have great love for those who call to you. I call to you in times of trouble because you will answer me. Psalm 86: 5,7

One of my favorites is Jeremiah 29:12-13 where the Lord says: “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

We will all grow tired and weary at some point in our seasons of life with God. Even though we still love the Lord, our vibrant worship grows quiet. God knows we will stumble, but waits for us to cry out to Him. He gives His assurance that we will find Him…when we seek Him with all of our heart.

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.  Psalm 37:23-24

Are you in a weary place right now? Just cry out! Go ahead and just cry like a baby to your Father.

    • O Brenda, I can so relate to this post. I’ve been so busy lately…just like a newborns mother birthing and raising her little one. And it is such a busy time, one that is easily consumed by the business and desperate needs of the youngling. Even when this new creation comes from God, the tasks can be overwhelming and we need to rest in Him. Much easier for me than your daughter in law for sure, but vital to our sense of not being alone.
Thank you for the reminder that all I need to do is cry out and He will be right by my side giving me exactly what I need. Enjoy that new little creation, and congrats on your expanding family!!
