Pray In Color

“I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer”
Psalm 17:6

In having a conversation with friends about prayer, I mentioned that often I pray in color… That caused some curious looks so I explained myself…

Journaling  has always been a favorite of mine, it makes my time with the Lord personal, introspective and helpful in planting His Word in my brain. In the last few years I have added coloring to my journal and prayer time, sometimes I use adult coloring books with scripture, other times I create my own picture or just write out my prayers in decorative lettering with an array of crayons, colored pencils, markers and pens. This may sound like a waste of time, but I have found great joy in it! It actually allows my mind the freedom to listen better to what the Lord is saying to me.
At first, my friends were intimidated at the thought because they aren’t artists ( at least they don’t see that in themselves).

Once, I reminded them that this was not a competition, no one need see it but them and the Lord, there wouldn’t be a grading of their paper… they relaxed and opened their mind to it.

I believe that all of us has a creative side, we were after all made by The Creator Himself! That doesn’t mean everyone can draw or paint, but everyone has a creative side where they can tap into the freedom of letting go and allowing God to do his thing through you.

You might even find some new avenues that allow you to express yourself and de-stress from this crazy world.

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” Luke 5:16

My time with the Lord is precious, I desire to glean all I can from him in those sweet moments.

Listening to worship music can set the tone, reading the scriptures, following the theme of a daily devotional can all lead your prayer time to a fruitful and creative place. For me this is especially helpful when I am in a dry season in life, it helps to stir, awaken my heart and bring me to the quiet place where I can actually hear his still small, but mighty voice.

“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.” Jonah 2:7

In the following weeks my friends have each texted me photos of their colorful journal. Warms my heart…..

My encouragement to you as we finish out this winter season is to get yourself some coloring supplies, a journal your bible and give yourself the freedom to pray in color!

Abundant Blessings!
