a beautiful life ministry

When you’re bearing the weight of the world

Does the world seem like it’s falling apart? Politically, environmentally, personally; when we look out at our bigger world or inward at our private world, it can seem like things are spinning out of control.

How perfect are God’s words in Psalm 75:2…

“You say, ‘I choose the appointed time; it is I who judge uprightly. When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm.'”

Our God is more than capable of holding the pillars of this earth, and he is more than capable of holding the pillars of my life.

I can see myself standing in a doorway, straining to hold up the weight of my home by pushing outward with my hands. But right there behind me is God, confidently holding the doorway with just his two pointer fingers! If only I would turn around and see that he is RIGHT THERE, I could live in such freedom!

But I don’t trust him to “choose the appointed time”, to hold the pillars of my life firm. So slowly, in an agony of letting go, I must remove one finger from the doorway by trusting in him to do one thing that I can’t do alone. Then, he will prove himself faithful, and I can very cautiously remove another finger. Each time, he will prove his strength and love, and each time I must choose to let him hold up the weight.

Are you bearing too much weight today?

Perhaps you are bearing the weight of political decisions that are out of your control. What would taking a finger off the doorframe look like for you? Would it be praying about then releasing the next election, allowing him to hold up the pillars of the nation?

Perhaps you are bearing the weight of a family member’s medical issues. What would taking a finger off the doorframe look like for you? Would it mean taking some time for self-care, and trusting that God will keep the pillars of your family aloft?

Perhaps you are bearing the weight of a child’s poor choices. What would taking a finger off the doorframe look like for you? Would it mean that you stop intervening and enabling that child in his poor life choices, and trusting that God will choose the appointed time to make himself real?

Or maybe it truly feels like your entire world has already come crashing down. What would taking a finger off the crushed doorframe look like for you? Would it mean crawling out from the wreckage and trusting that God will build something beautiful in its place?

In whatever way you are struggling to hold up the pillars of the earth today, I pray that you would be brave enough to turn around and see who truly is holding them up, that you would be courageous enough to eke those hands off the pillars and trust that the world isn’t going to shatter. Why? Because “it is I who hold its pillars firm.”

Amen.
