True Love is a Deeper Stream

There are two streams on my property…

One is a pretty stream that twists and turns as it flows down the mountain. It is fresh and full and teeming with life. Turn over almost any rock and you will stir up crayfish, minnows, and salamanders (or mudpuppies, as we call them). There are small falls found all along the slope. Deer, bear, raccoon, skunk, opossum, wild turkey and many more visit the pools that have formed in this stream.

The other steam is not as defined. It is found high on the mountain on the edge of an apple orchard my father worked as boy. This orchard stream has a nearby underground spring as its source. The water gently flows down the mountain. There are no falls and not a lot of definition to the creek bed. You must visit the springhead to be refreshed.

If one could only have one stream, it would seem that the first stream would be a better pick.

The problem with the rushing stream is that it is temperamental. Most of the time, the waters are confined to the banks and all is well. But, just let there be a big storm. Because the water source is higher up than I’ve ever climbed, the first stream gathers a lot of water when it rains. That stream has been known to jump the bank and flow elsewhere. The powerful waters from heavy rains can shift the rocks in such a way that the stream becomes permanently diverted. We have an empty creek bed at my mom’s to testify to that. A few weeks of drought can also slow the rushing waters to a mere trickle.

The second stream is closer to its source and would be the one I would claim. The water comes from deep within the earth…cold, clear and pure. There is not much show in this orchard stream, but the spring always has water. My father remembers sipping from it decades ago. Rain and drought don’t have much effect because the majority of the water in the stream comes from deep within the earth. The stream functions as a path from the source and it runs true.

Love is shallow if the fires of persecution can dry it up; a true believer’s love is a deeper stream.

How deep is your love for God?  Does it gush from the depths of your being and run true to the source?   Or do you find your faith being tossed about by the storms of life?

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  (Romans 8:37-39, NIV)

Hopefully, your love for God is like my orchard stream, close to the source…the source being the love our God has for us.  God’s love is bottomless and ever-flowing.  God’s love is dependable.  God’s love is sweet and quenching. God’s love is the basis for our very existence.

Savor His love.  Bath in it daily through His Word.  Drink deeply of His love in Prayer.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5, NIV)

A true believer’s love is a deeper stream.

  1. Wonderful picture of refreshment Glynda! It’s funny…often we are drawn to the picturesque, the pretty world view of things…..but true beauty runs deeper than what we can see. It is found at the source and along the trail that it blazes before us.
