Can God Handle the Real You?

What is your prayer style?  Are you polite, searching for the perfect words?  Does it cause your prayers to sound respectful, but not authentic?  What does this say about your relationship with God?  Are we keeping Him at a distance, instead of allowing our loving Father to embrace and change us and our circumstances?

It may be easier to have a calm, quiet, sedate prayer time, but God can handle the raw feelings we have.  Our anger, frustrations, sorrows, all laid bare and exposed before Him can be frightening.  But we need to remember, He knows us even better than we know ourselves. Our foolish and sinful thoughts are no surprise to Him.  He sent Christ to atone for our sins and adopted us, clothed us and promised us salvation.

The Psalms have so many examples of prayers that go through the full range of emotions, but always express faith in the Lord.  These prayers have been read through the ages, so why should we be embarrassed to be authentic in our private conversations with God?  We need to boldly talk with God and build our relationship with Him. Perhaps the real question is not can God handle the real you, but can you handle revealing the real, authentic you?

Heavenly Father,

Help us to come before You with praise, fear, hope, despair and any other emotions that are engulfing us right now.  Help us to stand firm on Your promises and the knowledge of Your endless love for us.  We seek the perfect words in order that You might hear our prayers, knowing full well that you desire a relationship with us, not perfection. Let us pray as generations before us have prayed.

Psalm 102 1-2,7, 9-12, 15

Hear my prayer, O Lord; let my cry for help come to you.  Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress.  Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly…

I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof. …

For I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears because of your great wrath, for you have taken me up and thrown me aside.  My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like the grass.  But you, O Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations. …

The nations will fear the name of the Lord, all the kings of the earth will revere your glory.

We praise You, O Lord.  In Jesus’ name we pray.   Amen.

  1. Because I don’t spend a lot of time around other people during my work days, God gets it all….my praise, my joy, my anger, frustration and impatience. He is like all of my friends wrapped into one….the one I know I can count on…maybe simply because there just isn’t anyone else to listen!! ….and I am thankful
