Feeling Adrift?

”Those adrift on their own wisdom shouldn’t assume the Lord will rescue them or bring them anything.” James 1:7 the voice

Have you ever felt confused? Derailed? Unsure of your next steps?

I have

I do -often

Daily even

Each day seems to be fraught with trials and pressure, and there are times when I simply don’t know which way to turn. The first chapter of James speaks to those going through trials. He instructs his listeners not to rely on their own wisdom, and also not to run from tests and hardships. He says this: “As hard as they are, you will ultimately find joy in them, if you embrace them, your faith will blossom under pressure and teach you true patience as you endure.” James 1:2

Patience

and Joy!

I don’t know about you, but I could use some joy today. I find it tough to be joyful in difficult circumstances. But that is exactly what we are supposed to do – be joyful. I’ll bet I’m not alone in this. When hard times come, this is how most people will react:

we plead with God to take away the pain

we look for a way out – any way out.

We consult anyone who will listen to us for their advice.

We lean on our own wisdom.

But James 1:7 says that when we lean on our own wisdom, we are set adrift, and in that case we should not expect any help. No one is going to come to our rescue. That feels like a very lonely circumstance indeed. But James goes on to give us hope. He tells us what we can expect when we gain our wisdom from the right place – God.

Wisdom as James understands it, is the ability to live life well and make good decisions. It doesn’t come as a result of age or experience, but begins with knowing and depending absolutely on God. Absolutely on the One who knows everything. If we ask, we’ll receive it. But when we ask, it must be with a single-minded commitment to His purpose. And we must be willing to hear that wisdom, whether it makes sense to us or not. Check out this scenario:

Our wisdom?

“The splinter of divided loyalty (God vs. the world) shatters your compass and leave you dizzy and confused.” James 1:8 the voice.

God’s wisdom?

Peace

Maturity

Fulfillment

Patience

Joy

Hmmmm….seems like a no-brainer to me.

Get out of the boat and set your compass on north, and He will rescue you

Every time!
