A Special Kind of Sacrifice

By Jane Wheeler

Dad was off working on the island because there was no work around BC in those days – only a couple of big jobs on the go and one was pushing the highway into the interior of Vancouver Island.  It meant that Dad was gone from home except for the occasional weekend when he would drive like crazy to catch the ferry Friday nights to get home for Saturday. He took off on Sunday to get back to the job. Mom was home with the two girls, babies really – three and two.

It was a special kind of love, the sacrifice my Dad and Mom made back then, doing whatever it took to support their family. Mom raised us girls for almost a year on her own with Dad working out of town pulling wrenches for the highway crew.  It was the 1963 and work was hard to come by, you took what you could get.

It was never “unfair”   it was always thought of as a supreme sacrifice and a gesture of love given by both Mom and Dad.

Reminiscing about this, I wonder, how much sacrifice will it take to keep families together in 2016 here in Northern Alberta in the wake of the oil crisis.  Jobs are being lost left and right, families are pulling up roots and moving, Dads are looking for jobs elsewhere.

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 1:9 (NIV)

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.”

Yes we were here before, job shortages, families torn apart by work or lack of it, moms raising children on their own. Some families will with-stand the stress and some perhaps not.

We can tend to sway towards the fearful in uncertain times but as the Bible says – “there is nothing new under the sun.” God helped families back in the 60’s and again in the high interest rates of the 80’s and He has not changed. The biggest source of hope and love we have HAS not changed.  Money can come and go, jobs can come and go but God who loves us will remain the same – always.

 “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

1 John 4:8 New International Version (NIV)

In a little girls eyes Mom and Dad loved us so much to be separated for a year to help us survive. In this big girls eyes God has never left – He saw us back then and He sees us now and He will love on us forever. I need not fear - only trust in the One who has never left.

One response to “A Special Kind of Sacrifice

  1. Sacrificial love is certainly the deepest felt. The situations are not always ideal, but the love that is offered in that time is so real…so authentic. Like Jesus’ love and sacrifice. I pray that the families feeling that crunch now, also feel the Sacrificial love of God, and hold to His promises. Trouble will come, and it will go…just like before. But God’s love remains the constant
