There is a song by Hawk Nelson titled “Words” some of my favorite lines: “They’ve lifted my heart to places I’ve never been” “And they’ve dragged me down back to where I began.” “Let my words be Life, Let my words be Truth. I don’t want to say a word unless it points the world back to You”. . . . Powerful! How many words stick in your mind from childhood, both negative and positive? Words can change a life and set the course for that life. They bless or curse, there is no word that is neutral, they all carry motion. All this power, controlled by your tongue.
James 3:5-6: “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body. Sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”
God is pretty clear about the power of our words. Just the other day, hurtful words were exchanged among my family members. They came from angry lips and were immediately regretted, it’s a natural cycle for us humans. Why is it so hard to STOP and THINK before we speak, especially to those we love the most? If we took a second to think of how our words will ring out, will they help or hurt, how will my speech represent God, my words are directly before the Lord’s face at all times. . . We might have a tighter rein on our tongue.
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14 This is an awesome scripture to focus on and memorize, may the words of my soul always bring Praise to Your face, O Lord! Have some self-control, taking a few seconds to ponder the thought “will my words praise and honor God” might change many life courses and relationships for blessing.
“Gracious Words are a honeycomb, set to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24
