The Hospitality of food

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

Food is a necessity of life.

We eat. Our body processes the food into usable energy. We live.

There are no if’s, and’s or but’s about it.  In order to live we must eat. But food can also be such an experience of joy and gratitude. The flavors we savor and relish can be so satisfying and pleasing to the senses.

  • Food is also a way to say ‘I love you’

  • When we make our children’s favorite dinner, it says ‘I was thinking about you and wanted you to be happy’.

  • If we bring a dish to someone who has been struggling, it says ‘you are on my mind, and I wanted you to know that I am here for you’

  • As we provide groceries for those who have not, or help to distribute necessary nourishment to the poor, we say ‘I know the struggles that you are experiencing and I am so sorry, but I will do what I can to try to ease your pain and struggle’

The hospitality of food is a much underrated language that we are all capable of speaking. You may not be a gourmet chef, or even a creative cook; but you can spoon a hot and nourishing meal onto a plate, fill a grocery bag with sustenance, or simply give from your abundance. As we feed those who are in need, we are experiencing Jesus, right here, right now. As He said: When you do this for the least of these, you do it for me”.

Jesus’ time on earth was filled with teaching, preaching and healing; but along with this very important ministry, He also provided for their basic needs:

Jesus fed the masses.

-not only spiritually, but physically as well. And aren’t we to imitate? Imitate the life of the living expression of God? He was our example- Let’s follow it! But where to begin……

conference headerThis October 18th, a beautiful life is hosting its first women’s conference in Romeo, Michigan.  It will be a day of worship, prayer, teaching and fellowship. Hospitality is this year’s theme.  Our very own food blogger Maria Wolfe will be instructing a few food workshops that will equip you to reach out with the love language of food:

Bread for the Believer: Making Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day

Bread has been called the staff of life because it is a basic food that has supported mankind for over 6,000 years. This hands-on class will teach how to make one of the ultimate gifts of hospitality; a loaf of freshly baked bread!  Who would not appreciate such a delicious and life-affirming gift? You will learn to mix, shape and bake bread using the wet-dough method popularized by Artisan Baking in 5 Minutes a Day by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois.  Recipes provided.

The Versatile Chicken

Chicken can lend itself to almost any cuisine and can be incorporated into many recipes. What do you do when unexpected company arrives?  If you have a rotisserie chicken in your fridge, you’re in luck! In this hands-on session we will show you several recipes that will highlight this versatility. They are quick and easy to make and can be served in a variety of ways that are sure to please.

Make it Ahead! Freezer Meals

Simplify your life by making freezer meals or meals that can be made in the crockpot. Freezer meals can be as simple as making a double batch of your favorite recipes and freezing the extra batch.  Crockpots are also a great way to make extra meals, especially if you have a large crockpot! Not only can you make food in large quantities but this allows you to show both your preparedness and hospitality when you can just pull a meal out of the freezer to give to a friend in need.

These workshops have very limited seating so please sign up soon to ensure your place in the class. We cannot guarantee a place in your choice of class if you wait for on-sight registration, so if you are interested in a specific workshop, please send us your registration today.
