Do you like to dance?

When the music starts to play, I want to slide onto the dance floor and start moving. I suppose it’s my nature to jump out and get going, but I’ve noticed that some people are just not wired that way. So are you a dancer or someone who prefers to sit on the sidelines?

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that some of my dances were about me; however, I know of a man, biblically speaking, who danced beyond the limits. King David was his name, and he was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22). He desired the Lord and His presence more than anything the world had to offer.

David believed that Israel would be blessed if he could take the Ark of the Covenant home to Jerusalem for he knew that within this Ark was… the presence of God. Yet, this was no easy feat. The Ark was holy; someone could even die while they were trying to haul it. (2 Samuel 6:6-7)

But David persisted and God helped him. God was even pleased that David desired to build a temple for His name. (1 Kings 8:18).

And so, on the day that David and his men were finally able to carry the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem, he danced with joy with all his might. You would think everyone was pleased, but that’s not the case.

His wife, Michal, the daughter of Saul watched and despised him in her heart. (2 Samuel 6:12:16) In fact, when David returned home after his dance party with God, Michal had some w.o.r.d.s. to say that were not so complimentary… How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would! (2 Samuel 6:20)

Yet, David’s response was priceless. No caring about his own dignity or worrying about being humiliated, He declared, “I will celebrate my God.” He worshipped God with his whole heart, his soul and mind, and his strength. (Mark 12:30)

So many times we hear the music of His Spirit playing in our hearts, but we’re afraid.
-We’ve never heard this tune before.
-We don’t know the steps.
-We’ll have to get out of our comfortable seats.
-We might make a mistake and…
-We’ll worry about how we’ll look.
-Occasionally, we’ll even hold back until it’s a song we know.

A few weeks ago I wrote about Inner Healing on my website. If you have ever wanted to dance with the real Jesus, I hope you will drop by to read a story about Inner Healing in the Bible. While it could cost you your pride, you probably would receive more than you could ever imagine. (Ephesians 3:20)

So will you take tHIS dance today?

  2. Barbara, I love the story of David returning the Ark to its rightful place: the city of the Most High God. There are so many gems to gather up from that portion of Scripture! Yes, I, too, am a dancer in heart and sometimes in feet and have felt the drawing of the Holy Spirit to get out and dance during worship time.
    Thanks for sharing this.
