“Out of the Pot” Gardening Containers

IMG_5524

Whimsical and fun are splashed throughout my home, artwork and yard. I guess you could say its part of my style, even in my clothing choices and hairstyle… So it’s not surprising that every year I look for fun ways to add whimsy to my gardening. It brings a smile to everyone who stops by!

This year I made planters out of some unusual things: a wooden cross; my son’s ancient toy trucks ( he is 19 now, so they are rather old!); baby size overalls; and an actual birds nest. You can come up with your own ideas, just think outside of the norm!
-Most things just need some plastic to line the inside and hold the dirt in.
-You may need to drill or poke a few holes in the bottom for drainage.

-Some containers will require chicken wire, attached with staple gun or wrapped around the top/bottom to hold plants in. Especially if you hang the planter (example the wooden cross).
-Use good garden soil to fill the container. Sometimes if it is a deeper container I will use packaging popcorn and a few rocks in the bottom first, then add the dirt.
-Choose plants that have shallow roots for the containers that are not deep. Succulents make for a great choice, as they require little water & soil. Plus they look good all summer long and if brought inside or stored in a cool dark place for the winter can be ready for next year.
-Water. Place them where you will see and enjoy them!
“Take Delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” Psalm 37:4

-Abundant Blessings,
Heidi Wilt
